Indefinite articles: Un, Une, Des

1) Forms of Indefinite articles

SINGULAR Masculine

Un garçon (= A boy)

Un + a masculine noun in the singular

Feminine

Une fille (= A girl)

Une + a feminine noun in the singular

PLURAL

Des

Des

filles (= Girls)

garçons (=Boys)

Des + a noun in the plural (either a masculine or a féminine noun)

2)Uses

The indefinite articles ( un, une, des) generally have the same uses as the English indefinite articles a or an.
They precede a common noun which is:
-indefinite: Un enfant joue. (A child is playing.)
-indeterminate: Des livres sont sur la table. (Books are on the table.)

Notice that:

  1. The indefinite articles agree in gender with the singular noun:

Example: Un garçon. (A boy: Masculine) Une fille. (A girl: Feminine)

  1. The indefinite articles agree in number but no in gender with the plural noun:

Example: Des garçons et des filles. (Boys and girls.)

  1. The indefinite article un or une can be a numeral adjective as the English word one:

Example: J'ai un garçon et deux filles. I have one (or a) boy and two girls.
